When the modern equipment is manufactured, undergoes repair or maintenance it is often necessary to use materials combining features of the lubricants and sealants for the flexible joints. Such materials are called lubricants/sealants or compounds.

Under the tough competition conditions of nowadays many Russian manufacturers of the food, beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical goods have tendency to get the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) certificates. In order to get them they must provide their goods safety including by application the human health safe lubricating materials on their equipment facilities.

The specific aspect of the compounds application for the purposes of production, repairs and maintenance of the food industry enterprises’ production equipment is if these lubricating materials are allowed and approved for occasional contact with their output goods.

The contact between the ordinary lubricating materials and the food goods is absolutely impermissible because it causes the taste change of the final food goods and very often makes them dangerous for human health.

The lubricants and sealants for food enterprises must meet the strict requirements and be non-toxic, without any taste and odour.

Dow Corning 4Dow Corning 7 and Molykote 111 silicone lubricants and sealants are absolutely safe for human health and are food grade approved by NSF/ANSI 51, NSF/ANSI 61 regulations and meet the USA FDA (Food and Drug Administration) 21 CFR 175.300 standard. Molykote 111 Compound is approved by Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) organization to be used in the drinking water supply systems. The German gas and water supply association (DVGW – Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches) has approved Molykote 111 application for gas supply systems equipment.

These compounds provide good sealing properties and outstanding quality of lubrication of the flexible joints. They have the following features:
• wide service temperatures range;
• good resistance to wash-out by water and to steam;
• good adhesion to many substrates;
• protective coating formation;
• stability against oxidation;
• low volatility;
• no odour, no taste;
• no teardrop point;
• very good dielectric properties.

Dow Corning 4Dow Corning 7 Silicone Compounds and Molykote 111 (which was produced and available as Dow Corning 111 before) have stability to water solutions, wide range of chemicals, mineral and vegetable oils, diluted acids, alkalis.

 

Despite the numerous similarities in qualities and their features values, Dow Corning 4Dow Corning 7 and Molykote 111 compounds also have some differences in their properties (see Table 1).

The distinguishing values in the properties of these silicone compounds given in Table 1 define the specifics of their applications to a great extent.

So, for example, the heavy consistency, low bleed and low evaporation of Molykote 111 lubricant and sealant enables to use it for lubricating and sealing the vacuum systems elements and the systems operating under pressure. This compound is recommended by the manufacturer as a lubricant for valving and control valves, seals, gaskets and stuffing boxes; as a sealant for the outdoors equipment (including marine one) exposed to water and severe weather conditions; for electric systems driving points and underground connections; and as a chemical barrier coating. 

The high dielectric properties and arc resistance of Dow Corning 4 silicone compound make it the most effective for the purposes of the electric insulation. Dow Corning 4 was designed back in 1940s specifically for electric systems of the aircrafts. This moisture resistant sealant is also recommended for automotive ignition systems, ships, spark plug contacts, electric circuit in-cut connections. The manufacturer also recommends to use Dow Corning 4 to increase toughness of the valves, rubber and plastic gaskets.

Dow Corning 7 compound with its soft consistency is especially effective as a protective coating or as a lubricant for rubber parts as well as to provide a release effect.

The excellent operating properties and food grade approvals enable to the food industry enterprises successfully apply Dow Corning 4Dow Corning 7 and Molykote 111 silicone lubricants/ sealants as a universal means for almost any of their equipment units and mechanisms repairs and maintenance.

So, for example, Molykote 111Dow Corning 4 and Dow Corning 7 application as assembly lubricants on the connections with tightness (such as press fit) in metal-plastic and metal-rubber pairs shows very good results.

For the pipeline threaded connections in the cooling machines of the poultry processing lines it is convenient to use Molykote 111 compound. Due to its heavy consistency, this sealant is easy to apply, it stays on the thread surface and provides a high-quality long-term tightness within a wide temperature range.

In order to prevent the packaging polyethylene film sticking onto the knifes of the liquid food products bottling lines, Dow Corning 7 heat-resistant compound is used as it has a good adhesion and a high release effect. The lubricating functions of Dow Corning 4Dow Corning 7 silicone compounds enable to use them to eliminate squeak, to prevent seizing and to provide smooth movement in the shutter brake gears of the refrigerate show-cases at the food trading enterprises and the public catering places. Their soft consistency enables to apply these materials onto the working surfaces by an even thin layer what provides the equipment long-term and durable service life when the lubricating material consumption is the least.

The selection of the lubricants and sealants suitable for the valving elements is defined by their viscosity and resistance to washing-off. Any compound from Dow Corning range finds its application as an effective preventive measure against the typical problems for better lubrication, protection and additional sealing on the brand new parts and components.

However, if the valving elements are already worn enough, the compounds with low viscosity are washed-off easier and not able to provide the unit tightness at the high pressure of the media.

The same compound is used where the water (WRAS) and gas (DVGW) approvals are required to use the lubricating materials in water supply and gas supply systems. In the vacuum systems it is also necessary to use Molykote 111 due to its lowest oil evaporation value.
